The Internet is filled with so-called guru’s telling the world the best way to make money online. Many of them claim to have “secrets” and “underground” methods that you cannot find anywhere else. Many promotions claim all you have to do is follow their “blueprint” for online business success.

You often hear the cliché to just copy what successful people are doing. Some go so far as to even encourage stealing other people’s methods to make money online. While there can be a measure of wisdom in imitating successful people, there is also great value in showing initiative and being innovative in your online business.

Yes, I just quoted Dr. Seuss! I could not think of a better way to emphasize the need to think on your own. Just following the crowd all the time is never a good strategy. At the same time, it is not helpful to completely ignore trends and methods that are proving successful. The essential key is to always take a little time and think through every step you are taking. Everyone has different circumstances, budgets, and other things that will determine what may be best in their situation.

Our intention in this article is not to disparage the genuine teachers and mentors that are truly helping people to learn successful Internet marketing techniques. I have many good friends and colleagues that are providing great help and assistance to others. However, there are also many individuals that actually hinder people by promoting outdated, unethical, and ineffective strategies.

Nevertheless, there is a history of innovators becoming wealthy by simply thinking up new website models, unique services or products. Many of these fail, of course, but you will never know the potential of your idea unless you actually implement it.

In summary, there are definitely times when there is no need to reinvent the wheel. Using proven methods that other marketers have already successfully used can often be a great way to move ahead, especially for newer ones. At other times, though, using your own creativity, ingenuity, foresight, and courage can help you excel. It is possible to be a leader in new methods and techniques that eventually others will start imitating.
